Power Steering Problem Lead to GM Truck and SUV Recall

What happens when power-steering fails?

General Motors auto recalls attorneys have learned that a power-steering system failure has resulted in over 1 million GM trucks and SUVs being recalled by the popular auto manufacturer. “About 30 crashes due to the temporary loss of power-assisted steering” have been reported, according to a spokesman for the automaker, resulting in two known injuries, but reportedly no known fatalities.

Allegedly, the power-steering “may momentarily fail before suddenly returning during low-speed turns”. The glitch can increase the likelihood of crashes due to difficulty steering the vehicle. Trying to steer the vehicle after losing the assist drivers get from power-steering is hard, but steering is apparently not the only system impacted by the glitch. “Other related electrical systems, such as traction control, air-conditioning, warning chimes, power door locks, and cruise control may also stop working when the power steering has been lost”.

Owners and lessees of the affected vehicles will reportedly receive a software update from General Motors to repair the problem at no cost to them.

Impacted vehicles subject to the recall include certain 2015 SUVs and pick-up trucks such as: Cadillac Escalade SUVs; Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks; Chevrolet Suburban SUVs; Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs; GMC Sierra 1500 trucks; and GMC Yukon SUVs.
