Ford F-150

The Ford F-series pickup truck has held the title of best-selling vehicle in the US for almost four uninterrupted decades, and of best-selling truck for longer. It sold almost 900,000 units in the US in 2019. Ford Motor Company is stopping production of all but two of its sedans in order to focus on pickup trucks like the F-series.

The F-150 is the lightest duty, and most popular, truck in the F-series. It fits above the Ranger in the Ford truck family. The 2021 model launches the fourteenth generation of the F-150. It boasts 6 powertrain options, including the first hybrid in the series, together with the carried over 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6s, a 5.0-liter V8, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, and the base 3.3-liter V6. All come with 10 speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive as standard, with four-wheel-drive optional.

Despite its popularity, the F-150 is plagued with problems, ranging from defective seat belts, door locks, and airbags to transmission and engine defects. 2015-2017 models were subject to lawsuits and a massive recall of 1.3 million trucks due to door latches that freeze in cold temperatures, allowing the doors to fly open whilst in motion. An NHTSA investigation led to the recall of 350,000 trucks in June 2020 due to a faulty brake master cylinder that can leak brake fluid into the brake booster and reduce braking power. Another NHTSA investigation led to the recall of 2014-2018 models because seat belt pretensioners were generating sparks during deployment which can ignite combustible components in the B-pillar, and cause a vehicle fire.

In September 2018, Ford Motor Company announced the recall of nearly 2 million F-150s in connection with a seat belt defect that could cause vehicle fires. The recall covers 1.995 million model year 2015-2018 F-150 pickup trucks in North America, including 1.619 million in the U.S. The move came in response to an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into reports of fires dues to the defect. Ford claims it has identified at least 23 reports of smoke or fire-related to the defect, but no accidents or injuries have been reported. The defect involves front-seat pretensioners that can generate excessive sparks when they deploy, triggering a fire. Dealers have been instructed to replace the seat belt pretensioners.

In April 2018, Ford announced the recall of 350,000 model year 2018 F-150s and Expeditions dues to faulty transmission gears. A defective clip that locks the gear shift cable to the transmission could result in the car shifting into a gear the driver has not chosen, such as from Park to Drive, which could cause a roll-away accident if the emergency brake is not engaged. Ford instructed dealers to inspect the defective gear shift clips and replace them as necessary.
