Jeep Recalls

Jeep vehicles have been plagued by a wide range range of problems such as water leaks from doors, windows, and vents, vibrations and noise at high speeds or while braking (the “death wobble”), airbag system failures, engine stalls and shutdowns, transmission issues and many others.  As such, Fiat Chrysler has issued numerous technical service bulletins and recalls over the years.

  • In May 2017, Jeep announced the recall of 1,178 Compass models equipped with a 6-speed transmission. The left front vehicle axle shaft may not be seated properly which could cause the axle shaft to separate and fracture while driving. If the vehicle is parked, the vehicle could roll if the parking brake was not utilized.

  • In May 2016, Fiat Chrysler recalled more than 500,000 2007-2016 model year Jeep Wrangler SUVs. Problems in the airbag system could prevent the devices from deploying during collisions. The problem was with the clockspring that forms part of the circuit that helps control the airbag function. Excessive exposure to dust and dirt, typically from off-road driving, could compromise the clockspring and prevent driver-side airbag deployment.

  • In April 2016, the automaker recalled 1.1 million Jeep Grand Cherokees because the vehicles could roll when the electronic transmission is improperly used, leading to accidental injuries. These transmissions return to a neutral position and drivers needed to manually shift to park. Although a chime was designed to alert drivers that the vehicle was not in park, the chime could not be heard when the engine was running. Numerous complaints and injuries were reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • In 2015, Fiat Chrysler recalled 75,363 2015 Jeep Cherokee SUVs due to a fire risk. Air-conditioning lines were improperly installed on some vehicles and were in close proximity to engine exhaust manifolds, posing a fire risk under certain operating conditions.

  • In 2014, 90,000 Grand Cherokees were recalled over a software glitch that could disable both the anti-lock braking system and the electronic stability control mechanism posing a serious danger to drivers. The malfunctioning software also may have activated multiple warning lights and led to the loss of illumination in the instrument panel.
