Ford Escape

The Escape was released by Ford in 2001 as the result of a joint development with Mazda, which released a cousin vehicle in its Tribute. The Escape is a popular compact crossover that has seen US sales exceeding 250,000 units per year since 2011.

Now in its fourth generation, the Ford Escape was released for the 2020 model year in four engine options, including two hybrids. It offers a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine as standard with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine available on the SEL and Titanium trims. The hybrid returns after a 7-year absence, and the first plug-in hybrid is introduced. In its 2020 redesign, Ford has sought to improve on the unimpressive safety ratings and fuel economy of earlier generations, and consolidate its position as an affordable and versatile car for small families.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports numerous recalls and complaints for the Escape. In its first year, the 2020 Escape is subject to a recall for loose seat backs that do not comply with federal safety standards (2020.) Other recalls for recent year models relate to defective airbags (2016, 2018); power windows that can close on a body part and cause injury (2017); and incorrect brake hoses which lead to fluid leaks (2018.) Owners suffer frequent and expensive engine problems, from noises to total engine failure, often related to leaking coolant. The electricals are another common source of problems for owners, some of whom report total loss of power while driving. The new Escape Hybrid is already generating complaints about repeated “Stop Safely Now” alerts, which cause engine shutdown, and are confounding drivers and dealers alike.
