The Jeep Cherokee was first introduced by American Motors Corporation in 1974 as a successor to its iconic Jeep Wagoneer from the 1960s (the Wagoneer is widely considered to be the first sport utility vehicle). Now in its fifth generation, the Jeep Cherokee is a midsize SUV produced by Fiat-Chrysler.
The latest version of the Cherokee was first sold for the 2014 model year and has consistently generated about 200,000 of annual vehicles sales in the US.
The various 2018-20 Cherokee models and trim levels have suffered from a variety of major defects and Abeel & Associates has represented dozens of Cherokee owners in Lemon Law cases.
The 2018, 2019 and 2020 Cherokees have generated numerous official recalls and hundreds of complaints with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
Recent model year Cherokee are experiencing the following defects:
Back in 2015, Fiat Chrysler recalled 75,363 2015 Jeep Cherokee SUVs due to a fire risk. Air-conditioning lines were improperly installed on some vehicles and were in close proximity to engine exhaust manifolds, posing a fire risk under certain operating conditions.
Oil commonly leaks from the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket.
Rough shifting, delayed shifting while driving, delayed shifting while accelerating.
The throttle position sensor (TPS) fails, leading to hard starting, stalling, and hesitation when accelerating.
Improperly welded pipes in the exhaust manifold may cause ticking noises and other issues.
In May 2018, FCA recalled certain 2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter engines. Some engines were missing valve stem keepers, which caused the valve to drop into the engine cylinder, resulting in engine damage. These engines may also have a reversed camshaft cap that can damage the camshaft bearing causing camshaft failure. Dealers were instructed to inspect the valves and camshafts and make needed repairs at no charge.
In July 2018, certain model year 2018 Jeep Cherokee all-wheel drive vehicles were recalled due to a defect in the front half shaft assembly. The bearing cage was not properly heat treated, which could cause it to break and the half shaft assembly to fail. This could result in a loss of engine power while driving or cause the vehicle to move while in the “park” position. FCA instructed dealers to replace the front right half shaft assemblies, free of charge.
In August 2018, FCA recalled certain model year 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokees and other Jeep vehicles due to an electrical system defect. The powertrain control modules were equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. Dealers were instructed to replace the powertrain control module, free of charge.
In October 2018, over 86,000 model year 2019 Jeep Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to a software glitch that caused the vehicles to stall when drivers slowed to a stop. In particular, the recall affected vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine. Dealers were instructed to update the powertrain controller software at no charge to owners.
