The Escalade is the full-size SUV offered by Cadillac, the top-line luxury brand of General Motors. Introduced in 1999, it was Cadillac’s first major entry to the SUV market. It has had a number of facelifts in its 21 years and has undergone another redesign for the 2021 model year.

The Escalade is manufactured at the same Arlington, Texas plant as Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Suburban and GMC’s Yukon and Yukon XL and shares much with those vehicles. The 2021 model is available in five trim levels—Luxury, Premium, Sport, Premium Luxury Platinum and Sport Platinum. The standard engine is still a 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine with 10-speed automatic transmission but Cadillac is releasing a diesel option in the 2021 Escalade for the first time with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The 2021 Escalade will also feature a contemporary independent rear suspension system.

Although the Escalade is touted as a luxury vehicle, critics contend that its luxury is skin deep. Owners complain about its stiff handling, sluggish stopping, poor fuel economy and an unintuitive infotainment system. Complaints about problems with the Escalade’s brakes are frequent and recent year models are subject to a recent recall related to the braking system. There are also multiple recalls relating to defects with the airbags (2016 and 2017) and the 2020 model has recently been recalled due to a missing pressure regulator in the fuel pump which can lead to over-pressurization and increase the risk of fire.
