The Chevrolet Malibu, a mid-size sedan, was originally released in the US in 1964 as a trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle. It was allocated its own model line in 1978, and was available in the US until 1983, and again from 1997. With the discontinuation of the Impala and the Cruze, the Malibu and the Sonic are the last Chevrolet sedans on the US market, and there are rumors that either, or both, of these could be discontinued in the next 3-5 years. Sales of the Malibu have been declining in the US since its sales peak of over 225,000 units in 2016.
The 2020 model of the Malibu features front-wheel-drive and a 1.5-liter turbo engine with CVT or 2.0-liter turbo engine with 9-speed automatic transmission. A full hybrid model that was introduced in the most recent generation has been discontinued in 2020 due to poor sales. Recent models include the L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier trims. The Malibu is praised for its quiet, comfortable ride and responsive handling but critics are generally unimpressed with the space and quality of the interior finish.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports numerous recalls and complaints relating to the Malibu. The improper activation of the Reduced Engine Power mode while driving is a problem that seems to plague recent Chevrolet sedans. The Malibu is also known to have an issue with shifting into park position which results in the car unintentionally moving because it is not fully in the park position, or being unable to turn off the car because it will not recognize that it is in park. Recalls for recent model years (2016, 2017,2018), include multiple issues related to malfunctioning airbags, a fuel pump flange weld that may fracture and cause a fire, and insufficient coating on the rear brake caliper pistons that can reduce rear brake performance.
