Volvo Seatbelt Recall
If you happen to own or lease a 2017 Volvo XC90 SUV, there’s been an auto recall related to its third-row seat belts.
Although there haven’t been any accidents or injuries reported yet—and the seatbelt will reportedly still function in the event of an accident—the defect could cause a piece inside the seatbelt retractor to enter the cabin as a speeding projectile. Specifically, the “right hand seatbelt retractor called a micro gas generator can detach after the seatbelt retractor pre-tensioner is deployed”.
The detached micro gas generator can not only become a projectile inside the cabin but can also “enter the luggage area through the trim panel”. Volvo’s claim that the detached generator’s travelling through parts of the vehicle will reduce the speed of the projectile is not reassuring.
If you own or lease a vehicle affected by an auto recall, you are entitled to have the defect repaired free of charge at the local dealership.
