Honda Odyssey Open Door Auto Recall

Jan 9, 2019

Do auto recalls only affect engine parts?

One hundred seven thousand soccer moms and dads—and other minivan lovers—aren’t going to be happy about an upcoming auto recall on a popular Honda model. But even though the minivan’s engine isn’t impacted, a dangerous problem has allegedly been discovered and requires a repair as soon as possible.

Honda defects attorneys have learned that over 100,000 Honda Odyssey minivans spanning the model years 2018 and 2019 in America are being recalled along with another 11,000 similar minivans in Canada.

One of the major attractions of minivans for consumers is the convenience of transporting up to a large number of passengers—such as a sports team or large family—comfortably and without the inconvenience of hard-to-access third row seating commonly used in competitive large SUVs.

The key to a minivan’s popularity for many owners is the ease of the power sliding doors which open and close effortlessly and hands-free for fast and easy access. But it’s these very doors that are prompting the auto recall.

Reportedly, the affected minivans’ sliding doors “can malfunction and open while driving”. This frightening, potentially dangerous problem is allegedly due to “sticking” rear latch assemblies that may cause doors “not to close fully and…open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion”.

Reportedly, Honda will be notifying affected owners of the auto recall and the fix—which is free—requires replacement of the left and right latch assemblies for the power sliding doors.
