Common Jeep Cherokee Problems

The Jeep Cherokee is a line of popular sports utility vehicles sold by Jeep under various classes. Through the years, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV, to a compact SUV, to its current form as a crossover SUV. Despite the popularity of the Jeep Cherokee, customers have experienced numerous problems with these vehicles. There have also been numerous Jeep Cherokee recalls.

Timothy Abeel & Associates, a premier consumer rights law firm serving clients in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, is currently handling Jeep Cherokee lemon law claims. Our legal team has in-depth knowledge of the applicable state lemon laws and federal warranty law. We have a proven history of pursuing successful claims against all the major automakers, including Fiat Chrysler America (FCA), manufacturer of the Jeep Cherokee. If your vehicle has been in for numerous repair attempts and the problem has not been resolved, you may be entitled to compensation.

Common Jeep Cherokee Problems

Jeep Cherokee customers have reported all types of problems, such as:

  • Engine oil leaks -- oil commonly leaks from the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket
  • Transmission problems -- rough shifting, delayed shifting while driving, delayed shifting while accelerating
  • Driveability issues -- the throttle position sensor (TPS) fails, leading to hard starting, stalling, and hesitation when accelerating
  • Cracked manifold -- improperly welded pipes in the exhaust manifold may cause ticking noises and other issues
  • Recent Jeep Recalls

Some Jeep Cherokee problems have risen to the level of recalls over the years:

In October 2018, over 86,000 model year 2019 Jeep Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to a software glitch that caused the vehicles to stall when drivers slowed to a stop. In particular, the recall affected vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine. Dealers were instructed to update the powertrain controller software at no charge to owners.

In August 2018, FCA recalled certain model year 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokees and other Jeep vehicles due to an electrical system defect. The powertrain control modules were equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. Dealers were instructed to replace the powertrain control module, free of charge.

In July 2018, certain model year 2018 Jeep Cherokee all-wheel drive vehicles were recalled due to a defect in the front half shaft assembly. The bearing cage was not properly heat treated, which could cause it to break and the half shaft assembly to fail. This could result in a loss of engine power while driving or cause the vehicle to move while in the “park” position. FCA instructed dealers to replace the front right half shaft assemblies, free of charge.

In May 2018, FCA recalled certain 2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter engines. Some engines were missing valve stem keepers, which caused the valve to drop into the engine cylinder, resulting in engine damage. These engines may also have a reversed camshaft cap that can damage the camshaft bearing causing camshaft failure. Dealers were instructed to inspect the valves and camshafts and make needed repairs at no charge.

Is my Jeep Cherokee a Lemon?

If you own or lease a Jeep Cherokee that has been in for multiple repairs or out of service for an extended period of time, you may have a lemon on your hands. At Timothy Abeel & Associates we believe the Jeep Cherokee should perform up to the standards one would expect from an on road/off road vehicle. Our experienced lemon law attorneys routinely represent customers of all types of Jeep models including the Cherokee.

Generally, under the lemon laws of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, an auto dealer must be given the opportunity to fix the vehicle before you can consider a claim. Of course, clients typically come to us after their Jeep Cherokees have repeatedly been in the shop or when a dealer has refused to address their concerns. If that’s the situation you find yourself in, our lemon law attorneys can help.

When you consult us, we will take the time to explain your rights, and determine whether you have a viable claim. Depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to a refund, or a replacement vehicle. You should also know that lemon laws allow you to recover attorneys fees and costs, which means that you will not pay any money to us in advance. This provision of the lemon laws is designed to encourage aggrieved automobile consumers to file a claim, and to incentivize automakers to treat their customers fairly.

The legal team at Timothy Abeel & Associates has a well-earned reputation for being dedicated consumer advocates. We will leverage our negotiating skills to make sure that you are treated fairly. If the Jeep dealer or FCA fails to cooperate, we will take them to court. If you are fed up with your defective Jeep Cherokee, help is only a phone call away. The best decision you can make is to contact our office today.
