Common Jeep Grand Cherokee Defects

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is highly touted for being a powerful sports utility vehicle that can handle both on road and off road terrain, making it one of the most popular Jeep models. Despite this acclaim, owners and lessees have lodged a variety of complaints over defects, and Fiat Chrysler America (FCA) has issued a number of recalls. If your Jeep Grand Cherokee is not performing up to the standards you expect, it is critically important to know your rights.

When you consult Timothy Abeel & Associates, you will have a team of dedicated advocates in your corner. Well-versed in the lemon laws of New Jersey and Pennsylvania and in federal warranty law, we are committed to holding the big automakers accountable and fighting for the rights of our clients. We are currently handling Jeep Grand Cherokee lemon law claims and may be able to help you obtain meaningful compensation.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee: A History of Problems

The original Jeep Grand Cherokee debuted in 1992, and decades later the popular Jeep line continues to be the subject of numerous recalls. Back in 2016, for example, FCA recalled 1.1 million Grand Cherokees due to reports of rolling when the transmission returned to a neutral position after being shifted to park.

In 2018, FCA rolled out the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk equipped with a 6.2-liter supercharged engine, calling it the “most powerful sports utility vehicle ever.” Shortly after its debut, 1,200 Trackhawks were recalled due to separating fuel lines. This could cause engine stalls and increase the risk of an engine compartment fire, conditions that could lead to accidents and injuries.

In May 2018, FCA announced a massive recall of 4.8 million vehicles across multiple lines, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee because of a cruise control defect that could cause the vehicles to speed up unexpectedly. The automaker attributed the problem to a short circuit and instructed dealers to perform a software flash at no charge to customers.

Common Jeep Grand Cherokee Defects

In addition to Jeep Grand Cherokee recalls, consumers have reported numerous other defects, such as:

  • Air conditioner problems -- temperature blend and recirculation doors may fail, causing the AC modes not to change
  • Brake problems -- warped front brake rotors or variations in the thickness of the rotors may cause brake pulsations
  • Electrical problems -- the power window motor often fails in both front and rear doors
  • Engine problems -- engine fails to start due to a glitch in the wireless control module
  • Exhaust/emission problems -- the fuel tank is hard to fill and/or the fuel nozzle repeatedly shuts off while fueling, possible due to problems with the fuel tank, EVAP or system canister control
  • Suspension/steering -- loose or worn suspension and steering components may cause a wobble or shaking in the steering wheel at a certain speed and subside as the vehicle accelerates

In addition, owners and lessees of the Jeep Grand Cherokee complained about frequent engine starting and stalling issues, harsh or delayed gear changes, wrinkles forming in the dashboard upholstery, and intermittent electrical problems.
