Honda CR-V SUV Problems

The CR-V SUV is Honda’s top-selling vehicle in the U.S., with more than 500,000 units sold for 2017 and 2018 model years. The compact crossover’s popularity is due in part to its powerful yet fuel-efficient 1.5 liter turbo engine; the vehicle, however, is not problem-free. According to Consumer Reports, Honda CRV drivers have complained about engine stalls, heating system failures, and other problems. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received dozens of similar complaints. At this juncture, Honda has yet to issue a recall, although the automaker has stated that a fix is in the works.

In the meantime, if you are experiencing a problem with a Honda CRV, you should contact the experienced Lemon Law attorneys at Timothy Abeel & Associates, P.C. What is causing engine problems with the Honda CRV?

The engine stalls have been linked to a mixing of oil and gas in the engine system, which could be caused by (1) improperly designed fuel injectors that dispense fuel directly onto the cylinder walls or (2) the engine not heating up enough to vaporize gasoline remaining in an engine cylinder. In either scenario, fuel could mix with and dilute the oil, making it less effective in protecting the engine. This would invariably cause the engine to stall, as well as cause serious engine damage over time. Many of the affected consumers have been forced to repeatedly change their oil and spark plugs as a short-term fix.

What is a lemon?

A lemon is the term for a vehicle with a defect that substantially impairs its use, value or safety and cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts. Vehicles that may qualify include those with problems with starting, stopping or operating, paint defects, and defects to key electrical components.

What should Honda CR-V SUV owners and lessees do about the engine problem?

If you have a Honda CR-V with a 1.5 liter turbo engine, it is critically important to check the oil frequently to determine whether the level seems high. Other signs to watch for include: stalling, loss of power, a smell of gas in the passenger compartment, and heaters that do not operate effectively in cold weather. If the problem has persisted and the automaker has failed to make the needed repairs, you may have a valid lemon law claim.

Are there other problems with the Honda CR-V SUV?

The engine problem with the Honda CR-V SUV in the U.S. comes on the heels of a similar issue in China. In February 2018, Dongfeng Honda, a Chinese automaker half-owned by Honda, recalled 350,000 Honda CR-V SUVs and Honda Civics equipped with 1.5-liter turbocharged Earth Dreams direct injection engines.

There had been numerous complaints about fuel mixing with engine oil, causing oil levels to continually rise, sending fuel odors into the passenger cabins. The automaker claimed the problem was the result of cold climate combined with short driving trips, which caused condensation and excess fuel build up.

Prior to these complaints, Honda recalled about 24,000 CR-V SUVs in the U.S. in August 2017 due to potentially hazardous gas leaks from the fuel pipes that could ultimately cause fires. The automaker attributed the problem to defects in the fuel feed pipes that were manufactured by a supplier, although there were no reports of fires. The defective fuel pipes and the fuel hose might not be connected correctly, resulting in a leak once the fuel lines become pressurized. In addition to the fire risk, the fuel leak could cause the CR-V to run out of gas, stalling the engine.

Are there problems with other Honda vehicles?

Honda models such as the Accord and Civic, have also experienced numerous problems, including:

  • Battery failure
  • Loss of power/stalling
  • Engine shudder
  • Premature brake wear
  • Transmission problems
  • Brake problems
  • Warped rotors
  • Loss of power during acceleration/hesitation
