2017 Hyundai/Kia Recalls

In April 2017 Hyundai and Kia announced the recall of more than 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S., Canada and South Korea, including model year 2013-2104 Santa Fe Sport SUVs and Sonatas, 2011-2014 Kia Optimas, 2011-2013 Kia Sportage SUVs, and 2012-2014 Kia Sorento SUVs.

The recall was related to engine defects that either caused knocking sounds when the vehicles accelerated or vehicle stalls. The engines for the affected vehicles were manufactured at a Hyundai plant in Alabama, and the company planned to replace the defective engines with new ones. Although no crashes or injuries were reported, the repairs were expected to cost the companies hundreds of millions of dollars.

Shortly after this recall was announced, South Korea ordered Hyundai and Kia to recall 240,000 vehicles over safety defects that were originally reported by a whistleblower. The recall affected 12 models including Elantra Sonata, Santa Fe and Genesis.

Hyundai Elantra Recalls

The popular Hyundai Elantra has been the subject of a number of recalls in recent years.

  • In March 2017, Hyundai Motor America announced the recall of certain 2017 Elantra vehicles for damaged Electronic Power Steering (MDPS) connectors that could result in a loss of electric power steering assistance, subsequently requiring more effort to steer, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers were instructed to replace the EPS motor.
  • In January 2017, Hyundai Motor Company recalled certain model year 2017 Elantra vehicles due a brake booster defect that could lead to a loss of power in the brake assist, which could lengthen the stopping distance of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident. The automaker instructed dealers to replace the brake system booster assembly.
  • In December 2016, certain model year 2017 Elantra vehicles were recalled because the driver’s frontal air bag inflator may not have been properly installed. This could lead to reduced inflation in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers were instructed to replace the driver’s frontal air bag module.

Hyundai Sonata Recalls

The Hyundai Sonata has also been the subject of numerous product and safety recalls.

  • In March 2017, Hyundai recalled about 978,000 Sonatas sold in the U.S. due to a seat belt glitch that led to a least one minor injury. The recalled affected 2011-2014 Sonata midsize models and 2011-2015 Sonata hybrids. The seat belts may not have been properly attached to the anchor pretensioner, which could cause the seat belt to detach from the anchor during a collision. Dealers were instructed to inspect the seat belt and re-attach it properly.
  • That month, Hyundai also recalled certain model year 2013-2104 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles due to premature bearing wear within the engine which could result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers were instructed to inspect the engine and replace the engine short block as necessary.
  • In December 2016, certain model year 2017 Sonatas were recalled due to the same air bag defect that affected the Elantra. Dealers were instructed to replace the driver’s frontal air bag module.

Although Hyundai is one of the largest automakers in the world and its vehicles are comparable in quality, performance and safety with many of its Japanese rivals, defects and recalls are not uncommon.
