New Jersey & Pennsylvania Mustang Lemon Law Attorneys

The Ford Mustang is an iconic American brand that ushered in the “pony class” of vehicles,  sporty, affordable coupes that feature long hoods and short rear decks. The original 1962 concept was a two-seater version that soon evolved into a four-seater. The 1965 Mustang, actually introduced in April 1964, was Ford’s most successful launch since the Model A back in 1927. Through the years, the Mustang has gone through numerous iterations; the sixth generation was introduced in December 2013. The latest model boasts a wider and lower body, a trapezoidal grille, more passenger room, new colors, and a new independent rear suspension (IRS) system.

Despite its reputation as a muscle car, the Mustang has experienced various defects, particularly severe vibrations and transmission problems. Mustang Vibration Problems

Ford has received numerous complaints from owners of 2015-2017 Mustangs regarding severe vibrations, particularly when traveling between 55 and 75 miles per hour. When some owners took their cars back to dealers for repairs, the problem was attributed to faulty drive shafts. After the drive shafts were replaced, however, at times more than once, the vibration problem persisted.

Meanwhile, other Mustang owners were told that the vibrations were being caused by the tires, which should be rotated and balanced or replaced entirely. These fixes failed to resolve the vibration problem as well. In one case, a driver waited two months for the needed repairs -- during the convertible season when the Mustang was originally purchased. Others have complained that the severity of the vibrations blurred images in the rear-view mirror while driving.All of these complaints were of no avail. The response by dealers attempting to address this vibration problem was clearly inadequate.

Some owners have been told by Ford customer service reps that the vibrations are normal. Of course, that isn’t so -- vibrations that are left unresolved can cause other damage to the vehicle in question. Auto industry observers have speculated that there is a design flaw in the line driver or that there are other defects that the automaker is aware of but won’t assume responsibility for, while others suspect the Mustang was intentionally designed to vibrate so drivers shake while driving.

Mustang Transmission Problems

Although the Ford Mustang is generally known for having a durable transmission, customers have complained about a variety of transmission problems, including:

Transmission Slips/Sticks -- The Mustang’s manual transmission may jump out of gear unexpectedly. The problem can be caused by a misalignment of the transmission case or clutch housing, worn pilot bearings at the rear of the crankshaft, bent transmission shafts, improper spring tension on the shifter’s rail, or worn teeth gears. Mustang transmissions can also stick if the clutch does not fully release, the teeth on the clutch shaft are damaged, or because of insufficient lubrication or corroded components. Ultimately, transmissions that slip or stick can cause accidents that result in injuries.

Transmission Gears Fail to Synchronize -- Transmission gears should rotate together. When the gears are not synchronized, it becomes difficult to change gears. Difficulty shifting to higher gears may be due to problems with a binding pilot bearing on the transmission mainshaft, while difficulty changing to any gear may be due to the clutch not fully releasing, a lack of lubrication, a weak or broken detent spring, or badly worn gear teeth.

Transmission Noise -- A worn bearing is usually the culprit when a manual transmission makes noise. If the transmission makes noise in only one gear, look to the reverse countergear. If the noise occurs only in reverse, there could be damage to the reverse gear or countergear. Noise only in neutral means the problem is with the main drive gear bearing or the countergear bearings. Finally, if the transmission makes noise in all gears, the main gear, countergear, or mainshaft bearing may be damaged, or the transmission may only need lubrication.

Clutch Slips -- A slipping clutch can be caused by a lack of lubrication at either the linkage or the cultch cable, causing these parts to bind, leading to clutch slippage. While the linkage may only require adjustment if lubrication is not an issue, more serious problems include a broken or weakened pressure plate spring or grease on the transmission drive plates.

If your Ford Mustang experiences any of these transmission problems while under the manufacturer’s warranty, the dealer is required to fix the problem, either by changing the transmission fluid, repairing defective gears or parts, or replacing the transmission entirely. If the problem persists, there are remedies available under applicable vehicle warranty and lemon laws.
