Pennsylvania & New Jersey Volvo Defects Attorney

Is Your Volvo Defective?

Volvo Cars is a Swedish automaker established in 1927 with headquarters in Torslanda and Gothenburg. In 1999, parent company AB Volvo sold Volvo Cars to the Ford Motor Company. Volvo was subsequently acquired by the Geely Holding Group in 2010, a Chinese multinational automobile manufacturer. Today, Volvo -- Latin for “I roll” -- manufactures and sells a variety of models including SUVs, sedans, station wagons, sportswagons, and cross country cars. The company sells vehicles in the United States through its subsidiary, Volvo Cars USA. Despite being marketed as a premium brand, consumers have lodged complaints over a wide range of Volvo defects. The company also issued numerous recalls in the U.S. and worldwide.

Timothy Abeel & Associates has decades of experience fighting for automobile consumers under the Lemon Laws in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. If you own or lease a Volvo that has been in for repeated repairs that have not been resolved, we can help you get the needed repairs, a refund, or in some cases, even a replacement vehicle. Volvo Problems and Recalls

Through the years, Volvo owners and lessees have complained about engine problems, interior electrical problems, transmission problems, problems with the brakes and accessories, as well as sunroof drainage system defects. The Swedish automaker has also announced numerous mechanical and safety recalls, including:

In June 2017, Volvo Cars USA recalled certain model year 2017 XC90 Vehicles. The Micro Gas Generator (MGG), a component used within the right-hand seat belt reactor for third row seats, could detach after the pretensioner is deployed. If the MGG detached, it could become a projectile inside the vehicle cabin and cause injuries. Dealers were instructed to replace the third row passenger side seatbelt retractor.

In March 2017, Volvo Cars USA recalled 112 model year 2017 S60, S60CC, V60, V60 Cross Country and XC60 vehicles. Driver and front passenger seat side-mounted airbags with inflator initiators could fail to function during a crash. The seat belts were not in compliance with requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” and No. 214, “Side Impact Protection.” If the initiator failed to ignite, the airbag would not deploy, increasing the risk of injuries. Volvo instructed dealers to inspect and replace both front seat side airbags if necessary.

Volvo had an unrelated problem with airbags in February 2017. The NHTSA reported that inflatable curtain airbags in 5,500 vehicles sold in the U.S. were installed with bolts that were treated with chemicals that could cause them to break quickly -- sometimes within 48 hours. The bolt heads could subsequently detach, and the airbags would not be held in place. The affected vehicles included the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90 Cross Country. Dealers were instructed to inspect and replace the bolts on curtain airbags as needed.

In November 2016, Volvo Cars USA recalled certain model year 2016-2017 XC90, S90, XC60, V60 Cross Country, V60, S60, S60 Cross Country, S60 and S60 Inscription Vehicles. The front passenger seat belt buckle attaching stud could loosen, causing the buckle to separate from the seat belt bracket. These vehicles were not in compliance with FMVSS requirements No. 209, “Seat Belt Assemblies” and No. 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages." If the seat belt buckle separated from the bracket, the front seat passenger would not be adequately restrained in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers were instructed to inspect the front passenger seat belt buckle stud and replace as needed.
