Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger is a popular muscle car in the US with a long history. Introduced in 1970, it was available as a 2-door hardtop coupé or convertible with a huge number of trim and engine options (Inline-6 and V8). It used the Chrysler E platform, sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda, a slightly smaller Chrysler E car.

The second generation of the Challenger, produced from 1978-1983, was a major departure from the design of the first generation. It was basically a rebadged Mitsubishi Galant Lambda coupé with a less powerful Inline-4 engine, and did not have the same iconic image, or following, as the earlier Challenger.

Dodge reintroduced the Challenger in 2008 with a design based on the popular 1970 Challenger R/T. Full production started in 2009 offering a V6 or HEMI V8 engine with an LC chassis, which was a modified version of the Charger LX platform. Since its reintroduction, Dodge has tweaked and upgraded the Challenger continuously, offering a multitude of versions including the SE, SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, SRT Demon, SRT Hellcat Redeye. In 2011, Dodge introduced the more powerful Pentastar V6 base engine and upgraded suspension, brakes and steering. 2013 saw new aesthetic options, updated technology and performance-oriented suspension and brakes. In 2015, Dodge made some major changes to the Challenger with cosmetic updates to the exterior and a new 8-speed ZF auto transmission. Dodge also offered the Hellcat trim with a 707-horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. The first all-wheel-drive Challenger was produced in 2017 in the GT model. In 2018, minor changes were made with a technology upgrade, and suspension and brake upgrade options. 2018 and 2019 saw the release of two high power specialized models—the SRT Demon and the Hellcat Redeye. In 2019, Dodge began to offer a widebody package and it is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020 with a Commemorative Edition Challenger.
