The Buick Enclave was debuted by Buick in 2008 as a midsize crossover SUV. After the release of the smaller Buick Envision, the Enclave was repositioned in 2018 as a slightly larger, more luxurious vehicle to compete in the premier crossover market. It has seen relatively consistent sales averaging 45,000-60,000 units per year since its release.
The new 2020 Enclave is available in four trim levels—Preferred, Essence, Premium and Avenir—all of which offer a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 9-speed automatic transmission, an improvement on the 6-speed of earlier generations. The 2018 redesign of the Enclave prioritized reducing noise in the cabin and this has been maintained in the 2020 model, earning the Enclave the badge of one of the quietest rides around. It still, however, has a fussy, unintuitive gear selector and a manual sunshade, which are not befitting of a premium vehicle.
The Enclave has not seen many recalls in recent years, though complaints by consumers are steady (2017, 2018, 2019). The 2020 model has already generated a recall for a cracked right-hand frame rail in the engine compartment which increases risk of injury. The brakes on the 2018 Enclave are known to be problematic, leading to incidents of unresponsive brakes or the parking brake randomly activating while driving. Drivers also report problems with the sluggish Start/Stop engine feature, leaking transmission, airbags that do not deploy, electrical problems and the infamous exploding sunroof, which has generated litigation against various automakers around the country.
