The Chevrolet Tahoe is the best-selling full-size SUV on the US market in recent years. It was first introduced in 1995, though it had a former life as the full-size two-door Chevrolet Blazer. The Tahoe is in its fifth generation, having undergone a redesign for 2021.
The fourth generation of the Tahoe, which was available from 2015 to 2020, improved the fuel economy of this SUV with a more efficient EcoTec3 powertrain and improved aerodynamics. It was often criticized for its lack of space for both cargo and passengers but drivers liked its shorter wheelbase for easier maneuverability. The 2021 model is a full 6.7 inches longer creating more cargo space and passenger legroom. Also new for 2021 is independent rear suspension. The standard powertrain is a 5.6-liter V8 with 10 speed automatic transmission. A 6.2-liter V8 or 3.0-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine are optional.
The Tahoe is a favorite vehicle among emergency responders either in the four-wheel drive Special Service Vehicle, which is suited to snow, ice, and rough terrain, or the two-wheel drive Police Pursuit Vehicle, which, with its lower center of gravity, is better suited to high speeds and pursuit situations.
There are numerous complaints and recalls relating to the brakes on recent year Tahoe models. The 2016 model has four recalls relating to the brakes alone, including one regarding the deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump which affected 3.5 million GM vehicles and is the subject of an open investigation with the NHTSA. Other recalls on recent year models reveal defects in seatbelts, airbags, and steering (2017, 2018, 2019.) Consumer complaints about the Tahoe range from issues with the AC to struts going out regularly to complete loss of braking power.
