In May 2016, Subaru recalled 48,500 model year 2016-2017 Legacy and Outback vehicles because of total power steering failure. The problem was attributed to steering shafts that may have been manufactured on a faulty machine. Loss of power led to a total loss of steering connection in the front wheels. Subaru warned customers not to drive the vehicles until dealers replaced the steering columns.
